    "notes": "The purpose of this research was to find out whether crossword puzzles more effective rather than direct instruction to teach descriptive writing to the seventh-grade students of SMPN Air Lesing in the academic year of 2022\/2023.  The method used in this research was quantitative approach and the design was quasi-experimental method. The population of the research was the seventh-grade students of SMPN Air Lesing which consist of 64 students. The sample of this research was class VII.1 was the experiment class and VII.4 was the control class. The writer used random sampling to choose the sample. This research used written tests as instruments of collecting the data and it was conducted before and after using the treatment. The datawas analyzed by using Microsoft Excel. The results of this research were (1) The mean score of the experiment class pre-test was 49.51 and the post-test was 72.29, (2) the mean scores of the control class pre-test was 48.27 and the post-test was 69.96. Therefore, by comparing the scores of post-test both of the experiment class and control class, it was found that tobtained was 12.959. While ttable with two tailed of df (34+30-2) with significance level of 5% was 1.998. It meant that tobtained > ttable (tobtained is higher than ttable). That mean Ho was rejected (null hypothesis) and Ha was accepted (alternative hypothesis). To sum it up, the result showed that the crossword puzzle was more effective rather than direct instruction on improving the students' descriptive writing skill.
